57 Underground welcomes applications from visual artists working with a contemporary focus. Our membership has included painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, and multimedia, glass, video and installation artists. The gallery operates as an artists’ cooperative. Member artists may show their work in our gallery roughly once a year in a two-month-long show with one or two other member artists, as well as in occasional group shows. Applicants admitted commit to membership for a minimum of one year. Members support the gallery with $35 monthly dues and staff the gallery two afternoons a month from noon to 4:00 p.m. (At present, the gallery is open Friday through Sundays.)
Members are expected to attend bimonthly meetings, which are currently held at the gallery on the Second Saturday of the month, just before an opening. All members participate in the various tasks needed to operate the gallery and are encouraged to take part in occasional events involving the Pomona Arts Colony.
Applicants should fill in the application form and send 10 slides and their artists’ statement to the gallery, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of their slides. Member artists review each application. Admission is by majority vote of the current membership.
